An individual who received a parcel of land under the homestead act had to live on that land for at least: Five years
Homestead act initially made to attract settlement to new area by utilizing the opportunities to obtain new land and start new business. But problems arise when too many people wanted to receive the parcel of land given by the government. Approximately, only around 52% of people who fulfill the 5 years criteria eventually obtained the land.
