A plea is a person’s formal response to a criminal or traffic charge. A person charged with a criminal or traffic offense is called the defendant. A defendant is typically called upon to enter a plea at arraignment, which is the person’s first appearance in court. The defendant can choose from the pleas of guilty, not guilty, not guilty by reason of insanity, and nolo contendere (no contest). Entering a plea refers to the judge’s act of formally noting a defendant’s plea, or “entering” it, in the court’s official file. As a defendant, your plea is a starting point and you may have an opportunity to change it as your case progresses. Choose your initial plea wisely, though; some are easier to change than others

Answer:

Why do people plead not guilty?

A couple reasons are below:

1)They actually aren't guilty.

Sometimes, people are given the title as "guilty", but incorrectly. This is a major part in big detective series.

2)They don't want to be caught.

In many detective and police shows, criminals often lie that they are "not guilty" because they don't want to be caught. This is often seen in real-life scenarios as well. People plead that they are not guilty to wiggle their way out of a case.

3)They have a reason for being a criminal (and want to achieve their goals).

Another thrilling part in shows is when the criminals turn out to be doing something because they were influenced heavily. They may have been influenced by their parents, friends, siblings, or maybe even their idol, or star. There is always a reason that something is done--this does not change in criminal-like cases. A couple questions you might ask are: "Why did the criminal do this?" "What caused the criminal to be like this?" "What is the criminal's goal?".

Well, these all lead to a major criminal case, and so, that wraps up this question. What are some reasons for pleading not guilty in criminal case?

The answers are above.
