The gentry class was made up of the wealthiest people in the merchant class who own their own business or were professionals. These people were affected the most by the laws and restrictions handed down by Great Britain

Colonial society most actively supported the rebellion were patriots from different occupations.

  • Colonial people were separated into groups like rural and urban patriots, and women patriots.
  • Women patriots were known as Daughters of Liberty, who opposed  the Townshend Acts and the Stamp Act.
  • Rural colonists were farm families, small merchants and artisans who feared the British presence would lead to losing their land ownership as a farmer.
  • Urban patriots were the educated elite like ministers, lawyers and philosophers.
  • Merchants, labourers, artisans, sailors and urban residents also stood against Britishers.
  • All the colonist's groups joined together patriotism to fight against the British.

Therefore we can conclude that several groups actively supported the rebellion.
