James sold 450 tickets for the community play. Tickets for children cost $2, and tickets for adults cost $5. James sold $1,800 worth of tickets.

That means that the average price of tickets was 4.
Now the average of, 5, 5 and 2 is 4, that means that 2/3 of the tickets sold were adult tickets.
2/3 of 450 is 300 so James sold 300 adult tickets.

The total cost of the tickets will be given by :-

[tex]2x+5y=1800.............................(2)[/tex]

Multiply equation (1) with 2 , we get

[tex]2x+2y=900......................(3)[/tex]

Subtract (3) from (2) we get

[tex]3y=900\\\Rightarrow\ y=300[/tex]

Hence the number of  tickets for adults  sold by James = 300
