In statistics, a confidence interval (CI) is a kind of interval estimate of a population parameter and is used to indicate the reliability of an estimate. It is an observed interval (i.e. it is calculated from the observations), in principle different from sample to sample, that frequently includes the parameter of interest, if the experiment is repeated. How frequently the observed interval contains the parameter is determined by the confidence level or confidence coefficient.

We can never really have 100% confidence of correctly estimating the population characteristic of interest because:

  • It is impossible to sample the entire population

Confidence Interval has to do with the estimation about the range under which a particular set of values would fall under.

As a result of this, confidence interval can be very high, but it is seldom 100% because it is not precise and has to work with probability which makes it use a sample to judge the entire population which can be wrong at times.

Therefore, the reason why we cannot have a 100% confidence of making accurate estimates of a population characteristic is that it is impossible to sample the entire population
