Nets are a 2-dimensional representation of a 3-dimensional shape.
For example - Imagine a cubical cardboard box , when we open all the sides of the box and lay it on a 2D surface it looks like ( See attachment 1 ) The first 3D figure is a cube and the second figure is of its net .
To find the surface area of a net :-
Take example of a cube . When we open the sides and lay it on the 2D surface it looks like something as shown in attachment . We can see that it consists of 6 squares of same dimensions . If we take each side of the square to be "a" , then the area of one Square will be ,

Similarly , if we take a cuboidal box / rectangular prism , the area of its net will be
