What is Water Pollution?
Water pollution is defined as the release of toxic substances into surface and subsurface of water bodies such as oceans, seas, rivers, lakes etc. where these toxic substances interferes in the daily lifecycle of the natural functioning of ecosystem.
Water bodies can be polluted through different methods including pathogenic microorganisms, fertilizers releases and plants nutrients or release of the radioactive substances.
Pollutants enter the water environment from two main types of sources:
- Point Source
- Non Point Source
A point source as the name suggest is the single source of pollution which is specific and identifiable.
It is easy to identify and thus can be easily tracked and suitable actions can be taken to either reduce or prevent the pollution from point sources.
Example- Pollution cause through pipe discharge
A non point source of pollution is referred to that kind of pollution where there is no specific source and pollution is causing either from one specific source or through different sources.
It is also called as Diffuse Pollution and it impacts larger area.
It is often associated with particular land uses as opposed to point sources.
Example- Urban land use, Agricultural land use
