) The phrase “Manifest Destiny” was first used in 1845 by John O’Sullivan, a New York newspaper editor. What did he mean by it was the United States’ “manifest destiny to overspread and to possess the whole of the continent”? (by 3:30 please!!!)

Respuesta :

The manifest destiny was a wide belief in the United States during 19th century that the United States is destined by god that taking as much land in the North American continent would spread democracy and pretty much make America great.

This manifest destiny belief made America increased goods, doubled territory, and more wealth.

Hopefully this will give you an idea on what John O’Sullivan meant on the Manifest destiny to overspread and to possess the whole entire continent.
This term meant that the US was destined to control and increase the size of their nation from the Atlantic to pacific oceans. This idea would later influence foreign policy such as the Monroe doctrine and Dollar Diplomacy at the late 19th and early 20th century.
