The main effect was what to do with Texas. It later became a slave state that shifted the balance of power in congress so a free state had to be added to the union. This also did not help Mexico-US relations because it would later lead to the US getting a third of Mexico. Germany would later send the Zimmerman telegram to Mexico to get them to try to fight the US in WWI.
