Gold and salt trade via the Sahara Desert has been going on for many centuries. Gold from West African states was traded north to the Mediterranean in exchange for luxury goods and, ultimately, salt from the desert.
Ghana in Western African, was rich in gold but lacked salt. And the Mediterranean's who lived in the desert could easily mine salt, but not gold. Hence, the gold was exchanged for commodities, the most important of which was salt, that had been transported southward by Northern Africans.
As trade in gold and salt increased, Ghana's rulers gained power. Eventually, they built up armies equipped with iron weapons that were superior to the weapons of nearby people.
At its peak, Ghana was chiefly bartering gold, ivory, and slaves for salt from Arabs and horses, cloth, swords, and books from North Africans and Europeans.
