Women had always played an active role in Mogul society but now Moguls also placed some restrictions on women due to their interpretations of Islamic law. Other Hindu practices remained unchanged and, for instance, the custom of suttee continued as did child marriage. The Mogul era saw the emergence of wealthy nobility and a prosperous merchant class. Moguls brought together Persian and Indian influences in a new architectural style and in paintings. For instance, Taj Mahal was constructed and the Mogul school of painting was established for artists.
