Removing cursive classes from our schools would be a bad idea because A poll of our state's high school history and government teachers revealed that almost 90 percent of them use primary-source historical documents written in cursive on a regular basis. Also, According to Johnson Kipling, professor of linguistics at Upton State University, "writing in cursive teaches reading cursive, and many of the foundational documents of our country are written in cursive, as are other historical documents. Looking at a typed transcript of these documents disconnects students from truly understanding them as part of history. One of history's central lessons is that times change and things evolve." You may be thinking that students could just look at a typed version of the historical documents to get the same information. No, because (1) the typed version may not be available, and (2) reading the typed version takes the historicalness out of the document. To add to that, reading the typed version also takes the fun out of it, to elaborate, it’s very cool to be able to see and read the actual paper and handwriting that was used on the original document. As you can see, our district should not remove cursive classes from its curriculum.
