this shows that ponyboy feels overwhelmed and is not sure of how to express his feelings on this situation, so goes on to put the blame on darry. he does this because he wished he and johnny didn’t have to go through that. since they felt small and helpless since there was only two of them but more socs. makes him feel guilty and lost.
