Fences: At the opening of Act I, Scene 2, Rose is hanging up clothes in the early morning, humming and singing to herself. Her song imploring Jesus to “be a fence all around me every day” reflects one of the play’s important themes. How do different characters relate to and define fences? Troy makes some statements in the book that makes people believe he uses the fence to keep MR. death away,he uses it to demarcate what belongs to him and those on his side. Eg: when he sends Cory out,he tells Cory that his things would be on the other side of the fence.
