Through Frederick Douglass’ account, literacy had great power. He states, “I would at times feel that learning to read had been a curse rather than a blessing” but later states that literacy was “a pathway from slavery to freedom”. Why does he view it as both a blessing and a curse? How does your ability to read impact your life?
Douglass's skills proved instrumental in his attempts of escape and afterwards in his mission as a spokesman against slavery. Douglass was motivated to learn how to read by hearing his master condemn the education of slaves.
