The scramble for Africa was the occupation and colonization of African territory by the European monarchies between 1881 and 1914. The settlement of boundaries among colonized African territories was somewhat achieved with the Berlin Conference of 1884. This treaty regulated further colonization and trade in the African continent. Among the most sought territories were the ones which had large reserves of gold, as the metal was already highly valued in the global market. This led to further conflicts between monarchies.
