How water is contaminated?
Contaminated Water means water to which matter has been added by any person or through natural sources as a consequence of its use, or to modify its use.
Causes:
1. Flooding and other results of storms can cause chemicals and microbes from the ground to make their way into the water.
2. Run-off from everyone's yard or nearby farms
Types:
1. Physical contaminants refer to things that alter the physical nature of water. This include sediment suspension or soil erosion.
2.Radiological contaminants refers to radioactive particles in the water, meaning the particles have an unbalanced number of protons and neutrons, making them unstable.
These contaminants have been linked with cancer.
3.Chemical contaminants are from chemicals that are commonly find in the home or in businesses like the fertilizers and pesticides discussed earlier. It can also include chemicals that occur naturally such as nitrogen and chlorine.
4.Biological contaminants are living organisms that contaminate water. Some of the most common biological water contaminants include bacteria and parasites that cause disease.
Contaminated water leads to transmission of diseases such as cholera, diarrhoea, dysentery, hepatitis A, typhoid and polio.
Absent, inadequate, or inappropriately managed water and sanitation services expose individuals to preventable health risks.
To prevent the exposure to contaminated fluids or water, adequate measures like sanitization and protective gears like Goggles and mask are to be used.
