This is my evaluation of Locke's ideas and Rosseau's ideas.
> John Locke claimed that "The reason why men enter into society is the preservation of their property."
> Jean-Jacques Rousseau claimed that "The individual gives up some of his or her freedom in exchange for the protection and benefits offered by the group."
> What John Locke tried to establish with his idea was the following.
1.- Men are free by nature.
2.- It is a natural right.
3.- In that liberty, the right to own property is of the utmost value.
4.- In society, men find more value for their property.
> In the case of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, he wanted to convey the following message:
1.- Men are part of society.
2.- To better function in society, men need the protection of public institutions.
3.- These public institutions are part of what is known as government.
4.- So to get protection from the government, individuals should give up part of their liberty to get the protection of the group, in this case, the government.
5.- Rousseau's ideas were written in the famous book "The Social Contract."
> Jean-Jaques Rosseau (1712-1778) was a Swiss philosopher.
> He wrote the "Social Contract" in 1762.
> His ideas promoted liberty, equity, and respect in the relationships between government and citizens.
> John Locke said that the government could not suppress citizen's rights to life, liberty, and property.
> He wrote the "Second Treatise on Government."
> He supported the concept of popular sovereignty.
We can conclude that these brilliant thinkers of the Enlightenment were a big influence to other leaders such as the American colonists in independence movements such as the Revolutionary War against the British troops.
