Not sure if there is a specific set of rules, but here are the ones I always hear about. 1. always keep your knife sharp.( dull edges can be dangerous since they can slip) 2. cut on a surface that doesn't move, and is stable. 3. don't use the knife for anything that isn't cutting, or types of cutting. For example, don't play games with it, don't cut open food packages...4.Take your time. 5. When cutting fruits or veggies, cut the food with a flat side on the cutting board. 6. When washing, wash them first or last, don't leave them in the sink. 7. don't catch a falling knife. 8. don't just give someone a knife, place it on something to give it to them. 9. hold the knife down 10. don't touch the knife with body parts that are not your hands, like your tongue, face, etc. 11. store them properly. 12. keep your hands in a claw position when cutting to prevent cutting yourselves.
