  • Mass hysteria. In his words, mass hysteria occurs when a person believes that they are affected by an identical plague and this occurs when the community is stressed.

The dancing plague of 1518 started with a woman who began dancing. Next, others in the community began dancing like her. They danced without music till some of them became exhausted and died.

One of the postulations given by the author is that they might have suffered from hysteria.

This is a situation where a person believes that he has been struck with a sickness similar to that of another. It occurs when the community is under stress like famine.
