I believe the height of the cold war was when Russia placed the missiles on Cuba. this greatly affected people. it made them nervous scared paranoid. like back in the 60's when Vietnam was happening people would accuses others of being red spies (a term for communist spies) these people would often be found guilty even if they weren't spies at all. when the Cuban missile crisis was averted the united states and Russia both claimed victory for the event. we were lucky that the missiles were not launched or we would not be here. the missile crisis also showed that we should limit our nuclear power. so united states and Russia both signed pacts that limited our nuclear power.
