Kookaburras are terrestrial tree kingfishers of the genus Dacelo native to Australia and New Guinea, which grow to between 28 and 47 cm in length and weigh around 300 g.
The name is a loanword from Wiradjuri guuguubarra, onomatopoeic of its call.
Kookaburras are educational ambassadors for licensed and permitted educational programs. I do not endorse kookaburras as pets. They can be extremely temperamental, need a lot of space, need to be kept in a group, are exceptionally loud, and require a complex diet.
