It is when the moon is positioned between the Earth and Sun. A Lunar Eclipse happens when the Earth is positioned between the Moon and Sun. Lunar Eclipses happen during a full moon and can be easily identified if the moon appears to have an orange or redish hue to it. It does this as the light from the Sun reflects and refracts against the Earth's atmosphere, casting this colour to the moon. During a total Lunar Eclipse the Moon will phase from grey, to orange, to an amber colour before disapearing back into the night after the positioning of the planets shift.
