Two Mississippi companies, Howard Industries and Kuhlman Electric Company, are responsible for most of the transformers and power grids produced in the United States and shipped world-wide.

What role does a transformer play in the supply of electricity over long distances?
A) Transformers decrease voltage so electrical energy can safely be transmitted over long distances through wires.
B) Transformers increase voltage before transmitting electrical energy economically over long distances through wires.
C) Transformers decrease voltage before transmitting electrical energy economically over long distances through wires.
D) Transformers convert nuclear energy to electrical energy before transmitting electrical energy economically over long distances through wires.

B) Transformers increase voltage before transmitting electrical energy economically over long distances through wires.

Transformers are also used at the other end, to decrease the voltage
from the long-distance transmission lines to go into houses.

It turns out that if you pump electricity through the wires at a higher voltage
and lower current, then less of it is LOST on the way from the power station
to its destination.

The saving is so great that it more than pays for the big transformers
at each end of the long-distance electric transmission line.
