Explain the final debate between Lincoln and Douglas. Where did it take place, what points did each try to make, and how many people attended?

Douglas and Republican challenger Abraham Lincoln during the 1858 Illinois senatorial campaign, largely concerning the issue of slavery extension into the territories. The slavery extension question had seemingly been settled by the Missouri Compromise nearly 40 years earlier.

The final debate between Lincoln and Douglas was on October 15, 1558 in Alton, Illinois. Lincoln argued against the spread of slavery. While Douglas maintained each territory should have the right to decide whether it would become free or allow slavery. There were close to 20,000 people who attended. Lincoln argued that there should be no reason why black men could not have the same rights as a white man per the Declaration of Independence. Douglas always felt the white man was superior and that no black man were to ever be considered a citizen but to always be subordinate to the white man.
