Washington believed that as a newly developed nation, America needed to have allies rather than enemies. By getting involved in the war between France and Britain, we could've gained either one ally and one enemy, or two enemies. We had neither the army nor the supplies fit for entering a war, and we were best to stay neutral in all foreign disputes for the time being.
