Society as present in the epic poem "The Odyssey" is very different from what is conceived in the western world today. Women were expected to play either a pure or an evil role. That fact is translated in the characters of Penelope and Calypso in the story.
Penelope remains faithful to Odysseus, even though he takes years to return home after the war. She has several suitors trying to marry her, but she refuses to marry any of them. Patient and loyal, she is the ideal wife and mother.
Calypso, however, is none of those things. She seduces Odysseus and keeps him under her spell for 7 years. She is supposed to represent the other side of women, the evil one.
Thus, we can conclude that the idea society had of women back in ancient Greece was quite limited, and that the roles they were expected to fulfill were shallow.
