What role do you think the media currently plays in combatting future frauds?

Media can play a very important role in combatting fraud and corruption. The media is part of the solution to the problem of “How to Fight Corruption.” There is no justice if people cannot see what is happening.  Media fulfills the first act of justice in any society – they help us see what is happening. Media, as a tool for social justice, is not bound by academic or policy definitions of corruption.

Conditions in which media may find itself failing to report on acts of fraud and corruption​ are -

  • Media stories on fraud are used for political and personal gain.
  • Investigative reporting has to be carried out with strong independence, and if not, its possible role will be diminished.
  • Reporters give up too easily when the reporting gets complicated or too data-oriented.
  • There still is a lack of skills amongst reporters to deal with issues of fraud and corruption.
  • This normalisation of corruption and public service failure means that media coverage doesn’t result in actual accountability.
