What are the three principles of spatial interaction?
- Complementarity - There must be a supply in one place and a demand in the other for two areas to interact. Supply and demand must specifically complement one another. For instance, livestock are moved from the north to the south whereas cola grown in the south are sent to the north where they are likely consumed in big quantities. The movement and interaction will not occur if the supply and demand in these places are not specifically complementary.
- Intervening Opportunities - Exchange can only occur when complementary locations lack intervening opportunities. For instance, when examining the patterns of the movement of commodities from point A to point B, we must also take into account location C, which could serve as either an interim origin or an alternate destination.
- Transferability - Transferability is the measure of the real economic cost of traveling over a distance, either in terms of time or money. The "friction of distance" is the price of conquering a distance. Despite a complementary supply-demand relationship, interaction will not happen if the friction of distance is too large. Distance friction is influenced by current transportation technology and the cost of energy. While heavy, low-value goods like concrete blocks are typically used very near to where they are made, high-value, low-weight items like jewels are immediately transferrable and exported on a worldwide scale.
