Metarteriole can be described as a small vessel that connects the arterioles [a small blood vessel that is branched out from the artery] with capillaries. These functions in facilitating the blood flow in these small blood vessels.

They consist of individual smooth muscle cells which are present in a discontinuous manner and collectively form a precapillary sphincter that controls the entry point of that capillary bed.
