These findings show that the polymorphism of 5-HTTLPR is associated with different neurophysiological mechanisms of age-related alterations in brain activity.
Polymorphism:
- The regulating effect of serotonin transporter gene polymorphisms on female brain activity may change with age-related hormonal changes, according to the influence of ovarian steroids on serotonin neurotransmission.
- The goal of the study was to find connections between baseline EEG features and the serotonin transporter gene's 5-HTTLPR polymorphism in healthy young women (19-35 years, N = 85) and postmenopausal women (55-80 years, N = 44).
- The older age group of women who were L'/L' (LA/LA) and S'/S' (SA/SA, SA/LG) genotype carriers showed lower delta, alpha 2, and alpha 3 band power than the younger group. When compared to S'/L' genotype, carriers of the S'/S' and L'/L' genotypes had lower values for the power of these rhythms in older women. Higher beta 1 rhythm power in elderly women than in young women was a trait associated with the S'/L' genotype.
- These findings show that the polymorphism of 5-HTTLPR is associated with different neurophysiological mechanisms of age-related alterations in brain activity.
