Giving short responses or non- verbal actions that help clients keep talking are called Encouragers.

   Encouragers, also known as intentional listening is a way to fully involve your client, allowing them to explore their thoughts more completely. Encouragers are a variety way of verbal and non verbal ways of prompting clients to keep talking. An individual may use non verbal minimal responses such as nod of the head or positive responses to encourage talking. Verbal minimal responses and brief invitations can also be considered simple ways of encouragement to continue talking.

     Responding in this way lets helps the client to explore their feelings and thoughts more completely. Further paraphrasing and summarising are more active ways of letting the client know that they have been listened to. Thus, by using encouragers, paraphrasing and summarising a safe space is created for the client to explore his thoughts and feelings completely.
