A specialized MRI brain ordered to evaluate which areas of the brain are involved in certain functions, such as speech and vision. A functional MRI of the brain is used in surgical planning and/or to examine damaged areas of the brain. No contrast is used in a functional MRI of the brain.
In essence, MRI measures the water content (or fluid characteristics) of different tissues, which is processed by the computer to create a black and white image. The image is highly detailed and can show even the smallest abnormality.
MR spectroscopy is conducted on the same machine as conventional MRI. The MRI scan uses a powerful magnet, radio waves, and a computer to create detailed images. Spectroscopy is a series of tests that are
added to the MRI scan of your brain or spine to measure the chemical metabolism of a suspected tumor.
