Robert K. Merton was an American sociologist who developed the social strain theory. This theory states that the social structures may do the job of pressurizing the citizens to commit crimes. The resultant strain may be structural, that refers to the societal level processes that filter down and impact the how a person perceives his or her needs.

This theory was developed by Merton in the 1940s in order to explain the rising crime rates in United States at that time. Now it has become very popular among contemporary sociologists.
