Chemicals are the most common type of water contaminants. They affect both surface and underground water bodies. Industries and farming activities are the leading cause. Solvents and metals used in industries can pollute rivers and lakes.
Oil refineries, chemical factories, textile and sugar mills are responsible for water pollution. These industries discharge harmful chemicals into rivers and streams and pollute water. Agricultural activities are by far the leading cause of water pollution. Parking lots are a major source of point source pollution for rivers and lakes.
