The popularity of Father Coughlin and Huey Pierce Long motivated President Roosevelt to invest in more public works program.

Father Charles E.. Coughlin was a radio priest from Detroit. He was originally a supporter of the New Deal but later he turned against President Franklin Roosevelt when the latter refused to nationalize banking systems and also provide for free coinage of sliver.

Franklin D. Roosevelt on the other hand, was a President not intending to be a king. His goals were ambitious ones and he had great numbers of both supporters as well as enemies.

Several conservatives claimed that Roosevelt's policies were socialism in disguise and his activist government was actually destroying the history of self reliance.
