residents. But Gus didn't leave. When Sheriff Ramirez visited Gus to explain that he should
evacuate for his own safety, Gus replied, "I've lived on this ranch my entire life. Old Snowy
Mountain has complained over the years, but it's never burst out. I know the old mountain
better than those scientists. So, I'm not goin' anywhere." Sheriff Ramirez pleaded with him,
but Gus wouldn't budge.
Three days later, the volcano erupted. A huge ash cloud covered the area, raining thick ash
down. Gus tried to escape on foot, but he became lost in the thick ash. Luckily, Sheriff
Ramirez arrived at the ranch and led Gus to safety. "You were right, sheriff," Gus said,
panting. "I should have listened."
