The existence of social norms, both formal and informal, is one of the main things that inform social control, otherwise known as encouraging social conformity.

Social norms are the unwritten standards of what is deemed appropriate in a certain social group or culture. Social norms include ideas, attitudes, and behaviours. Social norms provide us with a sense of how to behave in a way that is expected of us and serve to bring stability and predictability to social interactions. Social norms are agreed-upon guidelines for proper conduct among various social groupings. Both formal rules and unwritten laws can serve as codifications of social norms, which are informal understandings that direct social conduct. Social norms are accepted ethically by members of a certain community or civilization as guidelines for conduct. Western Social norms examples include lining up at checkout counters, saying "bless you" when someone sneezes and holding the door open for someone who is entering a building just after you.
