In response to the Protestant challenge, the Roman Catholic Church rid itself of the abuses and ambiguities that had fostered rebellion before starting, with varying degrees of success, to recapture the schismatic branches of Western Christianity.

Overall, the Roman Catholics defended their faith primarily by reforming the church, reaffirming the doctrines with the Council of Trent, receiving support from monarchies like Henry VII, Mary I, and Charles V, who support Catholicism, and having religious organizations that aid in the fight against the spread of the protestant movement. Even though these strategies were very effective, Protestantism persisted. But even now, the Catholic Reformation continues to have an impact on how the Roman  Catholic Church functions.
