The Harlem Renaissance marked the beginning of proper recognition for black writers, poets, and musicians.
The most important movement in African American literary history was the Harlem Renaissance, a period of African American culture's flourishing (about 1918–1937), notably in the creative arts. Participants of the Harlem Renaissance tried to redefine "the Negro" in order to break free from the negative white stereotypes that had shaped how Black people viewed their history and interacted with one another. Harlem Renaissance efforts included literary, musical, theatrical, and visual arts. Additionally, they attempted to shed Victorian moral standards and bourgeois guilt over portions of their lives that might have appeared to white people as supporting racism. Although the Harlem Renaissance was not limited to the Harlem neighbourhood of New York City, it did draw a notable concentration of skill and intelligence there, serving as the capital of this cultural awakening.
