So the "gin" (short for engine), was a small machine invented in the 19th century to help workers separate the seeds from the fibers in short-staple cotton. Although cotton still needed to be picked by hand, the cotton gin improved the efficiency in which cotton was produced and the demand for cotton roughly doubled each decade after.

So cotton became a very profitable business that  demanded a growing slave-labor force to harvest it.
