Stephen F. Austin is considered the father of Texas.
Lawyer, settler, and executive Stephen F. Austin (November 3, 1793–December 27, 1836) was instrumental in Texas's secession from Mexico. He facilitated the entry of a large number of American families into Texas on behalf of the Mexican government, which wanted to populate the remote northern state.
Austin began his career as a dedicated agent for Mexico but subsequently turned into a tenacious advocate for Texas independence. He is now regarded as one of the most significant founding fathers in Texas.
Austin blocked a move to outlaw slavery in Texas, therefore advancing the interests of Anglo-American slaveholders.
In order for the American immigrants to further their interests independently of the demands of the country's Hispanic and Roman Catholic authorities, he attempted to persuade the Mexican government to create Texas as a separate state inside the confederation.
After this failed, he suggested in 1833 that a state be formed without first receiving approval from the Mexican Congress, and as a result, he was imprisoned.
After being freed in 1835, he traveled to the United States to seek assistance when the Texas revolution began in October of that year.
