The Carboniferous Period is one of the geologic eras in Earth's history. It belongs to the Paleozoic Era and spans the time between the Devonian and Permian periods. The time period during which the majority of the coal on Earth was produced is referred to as the "Carboniferous," which literally translates as "coal-bearing". Because amphibians ruled the land vertebrate kingdom for a significant portion of this time, the Carboniferous is also known as the Age of Amphibians.
The animals lived in the Carboniferous period were: arthropods which grew to much bigger sizes than they do today, amphibians, which took over as the principal terrestrial vertebrates, sharks, which dominated the oceans, and amniotes, which are the progenitors of modern reptiles, birds, and mammals.
