Historical sources are everything that gives us important information about past events. These sources, ranging from ice cores taken from Greenland and Antarctica, Stonehenge in England, Moai statues in Easter Island, religious holy books, meteor craters, coins, recorded audio documents or visual footages, hieroglyphic inscriptions in the Pyramids of Giza, Ancient Temples of Angkor Wat and Borobudur; literally anything that provides us information about the past. Historical sources are classified as primary sources.
Historical sources are significant and important because provide us with quantifiable physical manifestations, allowing us to be up close and personal to what these items represent; to study them and determine their significance in history, and as original sources of information. Items we can see with our own eyes, feel with our hands, or hear or smell with our senses.
Let's say for instance, your desire is to be a pilot. What does the original Wright Flyer built in 1903, on display at the Smithsonian Institute's National Air and Space museum means to you? or perhaps what does the entire museum means to you? It would mean that the entire history of humankind's journey to reach the skies, and indeed the stars, are important because they're the pioneers before there are jumbo jets and modern day airliners in the skies. These pioneers are the reasons why there's a job to be a pilot.
The example above is one of many as to why historical sources are important. As George Santayana once wrote in his book The Life of Reason: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.". Therefore not only does historical sources provide context, they can be studied and improved, used for references for the future, and proof of events happened in the past.
