An organism need not necessarily be carnivorous to be a consumer; it could only eat plants (producers), in which case it would be at the first level of the food chain above producers. Some carnivorous plants, such as the Venus flytrap, are classified as both a producer and a consumer. So consumers are all they eat; hence the word consumes, which means to eat.
