When a warm air mass meets a cold air mass, then the warm air rises since it is lighter. At higher altitude it cools and the water vapor condenses. This is called a warm front. It generates nimbostratus clouds, which results in moderate rain.
Compared to warmer air masses, the air in cold air masses is denser. As a result, as these cold air masses move, dense air undercuts the warmer air masses, forcing the warmer air to ascend and cross the colder air, causing the latter to climb into the atmosphere.
