Patrick and Oscar both went bowling last weekend, but not together. Patrick went during open bowling time, paying $1 for shoe rental and $6 per hour. Oscar went on family night, when each hour was $1 and shoe rental was $11. As it turned out, they played for the same number of hours and spent the same amount. How many hours did each one bowl? How much did each one spend?

  • 6x + 1 for x hours

Oscar has spent:

  • x + 11 for x hours

Since they both spent same amount of money, we have:

  • 6x + 1 = x + 11
  • 6x - x = 11 - 1
  • 5x = 10
  • x = 2

They both spent 2 hours and $(2 + 11) = $13.
