Josie sold candy to raise money for a charity. She sold candy to 7/8 of the 16 neighbors she visited. How many neighbors bought candy?

To find 7/8 of 16, we just need to multiply 7/8 by 16. Why that is, I can go into if you're interested. Anyway, if we wanted to multiply 7/8 by 16, we would multiply like any other fraction--hamburger style. xD Really, you multiply the numerators of your first and second number, which becomes the number of your new number, and the same thing with the denominators. To show this, know that I can write 16 as 16/1, since any number divided by 1 is just itself.

7........16 ......16×7
--- × ----- = --------
8....... 1 .......8×1

Since everything is being multiplied together, I can just look at 16 and 8, and say that 16/8 is 2. I now have:

2×7..... 14
----- = -----
1........... 1

which is just 14. So! 7/8 of 16 is 14.

(sorry for the periods. it's for formatting so you can better see the fractions)
How I didn't this was we know that 1/2 of the neighbors is 8 people. 7/8th of 8 is 7. So in 1/2 her neighborhood she sold 7 candies.

7 candies= 1/2 of the neighbors (8 people)
Multiple both sides by 2
14 candies = 16 neighbors
