"Just get out of here!" Tara screamed. The red walls seemed to pulsate behind her in agreement.
Turning around, Rachel tripped over the over-sized geography books that had been carelessly thrown on the floor.
"Pick up your stupid books and get 'em off the floor," she grumbled as she reached for the doorknob. She stormed out of the house and slammed the screen door shut behind her. Outside, mosquitoes harassed her, temporarily distracted from the luminous porch light. Swatting the air like a mad woman, she bolted down the wooden stairs and ran through the sand like a courier with an urgent delivery. Gusts of wind whirled and whipped the sand, causing her to stumble.
The salty air filled her lungs as she gasped for breath. Reaching the water’s edge, Rachel stopped and knelt to the ground exasperated. Water and foam rushed toward the shore before retreating. In its duplicity, the gentle splash of the rolling tide sounded like a reassuring whisper, and it drowned out the throbbing in her head. Lifting up her eyes, her gaze was caught by a steady white reflection of the moon shimmering on the water. Her defiant jaw began to relax. She looked behind her at the white house. It stood gracefully on long white wooden pillars. She knew what she had to do.
