NATO stands for North America Treaty Organization. It was created as an alliance of countries to defend Western interests against the Communist Soviet Union. It was signed in 1949 by the founding members; Belgium, The United States, Canada, Great Britain, France, Italy, Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, and Portugal.  

The Warsaw Pact was the equivalent of NATO but for the Communist, Nations led by the Soviet Union. It was signed in 1955 to protect its interests and security from Western countries. Its founding members were Bulgaria, the Soviet Union, Albania, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, East Germany, Romania, and Poland.
